Advice post

I'm starting a list of advice for the Koesters coming to Israel.
everybody, feel free to add/comment.

Weather:
It's going to be hot and humid. it can be anywhere between 80-95, but is also likely to climb to 105+. the humidity in TA is usually above 90%. the combination is not pleasant.
the good news, is:
- it's a bit cooler and a bit dryer in jerusalem and the north
- there's air conditioning everywhere
- it's not gonna rain
- it's going to be fun anyway!

Clothes:
bring stuff you'll be comfortable to sweat in.
don't bother with a raincoat or a winter jacket.
shorts, t-shirts, tank-tops, skirts... anything from "breathing" fabrics.
bring sandals/flipflops, but also shoes you'll be comfortable hiking with, just in case.
swimsuit!
hat
jeans and a buttoned/collared shirt is fancy enough for any restaurant. you will probably be fine with a t-shirt in most places. you won't need your suit and tie, but do bring some nice clothes :)
don't need to bring towels, the sharons have plenty.
feel free to use the washer/dryer too...

Cosmetics, etc:
sunscreen! (although you can also buy good stuff in israel. a bottle of lotion typically costs 10-15$, depends on the size, number, and if it's on sale)
you can bring your own shampoo and stuff, but you can find almost any brand in the stores in israel.

Electronics
the power system is 220V. camera chargers, computer cables, electric shavers etc., usually work in the range 100-240V (check!). in this case, you will only need a small plastic converter to switch from flat to round prongs. we should probably have some laying around at home, i'll let you know if you need to get one before you fly.
we have hair dryers, but not hair straighteners/curling irons etc.

Flight
it's a long flight, bring a book... they'll make you throw away at security any drinks that you may want to carry on the plane with you, so either bring an empty bottle and fill it up at the gate or buy it after going through security.
the gate to israel is usually at the far part of the airport, and there's another security check at the gate. don't go there too early though, cause you'll have to go through that second security again if you want to exit the gate area for some reason (like go to the book store or something). go to the gate just before boarding.
the airline staff usually go by and offer water/juice during the flight (not only during meals), and they let you just go to the back of the plane and get some water if you need during the flight. don't be afraid to appear rude or bother the flight attendants, trust me, the Israelis on the plane are a lot more obnoxious than you can ever be, even if you try hard.

Passport control / airport information
when you deplane, follow everybody to passport control.
you will be asked to give the address of where you'll be staying. i will send you all the details by email, i recommend to print it out and keep it with your passport.
the baggage claim is a passenger-only area, we will be waiting for you only after you find your luggage and exit the baggage area. in my experience it's rather quick, but august is high season - so who knows.
between the baggage claim and arrivals hall you'll go through customs. you don't need to talk to anyone there or show them any documents (unless they randomly select you or approach you themselves), just go through the GREEN gate to the automatic doors. you only need to declare stuff above $10,000, i think you are in the clear.
from the airport it's only a 15-min drive to the sharons...

i'll add more things if i think of them, and as i said before, feel free to contribute to the list!

Thanks Keren, that's good information. Is there a way that you can make it all happen sooner? I'm soooo looking forward to a long flight, jet lag, hot weather, and being with the people I love!

Ben's list of things that would be interesting for us is pretty complete. There are three things that I have been dreaming of...... swimming in the dead sea, snorkeling in the red sea, and sleeping in the desert. Oh yea, and beating Ron and Omer at billiards on their home court.

So I'm thinking we arrive on Sunday sometime (yahoo!) and talk and carry on the rest of the day and late into the night. What time do you think we should get up on Monday and start having fun? Is 5 a.m. soon enough? Let me know what you think.......I can't wait!

What's the Sharon's address? That's usually been a good thing for me to have at passport control in the airport.

I've been smoked pretty bad by Ron and Omer on the home slate. And they were drunk too. And I was sober :(

ben, you need to be drunk to play, don't you know that by now? it's just like golf, only some of the balls are colored.

gary, i'll try to make time move faster with my time machine. can't promise anything though, don't want it to end up like my weather machine. as for waking up at 5am, well, let's talk again while you're under the getlag.

Gary, I dont think we will let you sleep at all! At list not at the fierst week. We have so many things to do.You can take short sleeps when you use the toilet.;}Keren , you did a great job.I am getting more and more excited. Its becoming so real.Cannot wait!!!!!I miss you all so much!I miss hearing you plaing your giturs and flute.Sandy, can you bring your flute with you? And Gary,I hope you have your new fingers things that you play your gitur.Bring them with you. I promise to keep them in the safe so that we will not loose them !:{.We will take care of extra giturs. We will love to here you sing ,espesially the song that you Sandy wrote for the wedding.Oh yes, dont forget the disk of that song!!!!! we dont have it.I thing that it will be great to hear it at the wedding.
We will try to give you the best hospitality as you gave us-I hope we will succeed. On the weather Keren is working-she has good relations with the atmosphere.
Magen, did you get your pasport???
Yesterday I had breakfast at Manta Ray restorant(on the beach south Tel Aviv)I couldnt stop thinking about all of us sitting there eating a nice meal enjoying the sea sight and the cook air and relaxing sound of the sea.Remember ,Ben,our fierst dinner togeather there? There was one time we got blankets to put over us cause it was so cold in the evening.
Well, our list is getting longer and longer.Only now I realise that Israel is very BIG.16 days to wait.long 16 days.and then one week will be so short:(and pass so qweeckly:((((so rest as much as you can cause you are going to work hard here!Has Grady got a ticket too? I miss him very much.Hug him for me !

Sorry, Dalia, but Grady cannot come. He has a previous engagement at the Youngmsn's Bed and Biscuit, where he will spend his time playing with the other dogs and sleeping, just like in Canada.

I'm still debating the proper attire for the wedding. I don't want to be too warm and my black dress is quite heavy. Gary says get something else (he has never shopped for clothes in my size) so
I'm looking at a "champagne" colored dress. (NOT pink champagne, more like light taupe) and wondering if I want to spend that much money.

Still no passport for Megan the last time we talked. Today she can start calling the special number set up for people with trips arranged whose passports haven't arrived. That is supposed to put things in high gear.

If Gary gets up on the first morning at 5:00 a.m., I will hit him in the head and knock him out for a couple of hours. I expect to be jet-lagged and trying to recover from a day of dramamine haze, but I don't want to waste any time either. Just to sleep a bit.

Don't worry Ron and Omer, Gary is no pool shark. More like a pool guppy.

I will probably pack a whistle or two, just because I'll want to play once in a while. Gary is practicing everything he knows and will be disappointed if he doesnt' get to jam with Ron and Matt.

See you in two weeks!!!!!!!!

Yes, I remember the Manta Ray well. Probably the best sea-side restaurant I've ever been to, and I think the first restaurant I visited in Israel. It literally is sea-side. Great company and great food. And my first introduction to the bag check at an Israeli restaurant.

I think that Ben should not be drunk while playing pool. We all remember the effect it had on his golf game(at least the part he was conscious for). There might be a few balls left on the table by the time he checks out of the game if he goes that route.
